As a strategic academic leader, the Provost has expertise in teaching, scholarship, research, and administrative duties as well as a deep understanding of a comprehensive and highly diverse engineering and science University. They provide leadership and direction to all academic units and programs through the strategic plan, assure continued expansion of academic programs, and promote student academic success.

The Provost serves on the Rector’s Cabinet and collaborates with the Rector and other cabinet members to develop, implement and assess comprehensive and innovative academic programs and academic support services aligned with the institution’s mission, vision, values and strategic plan. The Provost role is a highly visible position contributing to the overall leadership of the University. The Provost will be engaged with the entire University, interacting with all departments at all levels and inspiring innovation and vision.

The Provost shows excellence in strategically-focused applied science and engineering research and education, and forward-looking strategic plan. The Provost supports all units of the institution to increase international stature in addressing issues pertaining to global change and energy transition. Additionally, the Provost oversees the Library, the Museum of Earth Science, and the Honors and Scholars Programs.


The Provost is the second-ranking administrative officer of the University and works closely with the Rector to provide the leadership and vision to move the University forward in achieving its strategic goals. As the chief academic officer of the University, the Provost defines and advances the academic vision of the University, provides leadership in achieving and refining the goals of the strategic plan, coordinates the development of curriculum and of academic programs and services, promotes faculty development and research activity, and leads efforts to ensure campus diversity in the broadest sense.

The Provost reports directly to the Rector and assumes the duties of the Rector including chairing the Rector’s Executive Committee and Cabinet in the Rector’s absence. All academic entities at the University report to the Provost.

The Provost initiates development and oversees implementation of strategic and tactical plans for reaching the academic and educational goals of the University;

  • Provides vision for academic program planning and development within and across disciplines;
  • Fosters a range of scholarship and creativity;
  • Directs the recruitment, retention, and professional development of a distinguished and diverse faculty and academic staff;
  • Participates in developing strategies for recruiting and retaining an outstanding, diverse undergraduate and graduate student body;
  • Promotes excellence in education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including cutting-edge research on learning and the use of educational technology.

The successful candidate will be an individual of distinguished academic and administrative accomplishment with the highest integrity. He or she must possess an outstanding record of scholarship and academic leadership, including:

  • An earned doctorate with credentials that merit appointment as a full professor in an academic department of the university;
  • An understanding and commitment to the education and research mission of the university;
  • Significant accomplishments as an educator, scholar, and academic administrator, with strong evidence of leadership in academic program development;
  • Experience in strategic planning, budget, management, and initiation of reforms;
  • Ability to work with the faculty and other members of the academic community;
  • Successful experience engaging stakeholders and constituents, outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; and an open and collaborative management style.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Senior level management experience for three to five years in western higher education;
  • Prior management ability of administrative teams;
  • Fluent in English;
  • Ability to work with complicated agenda and demanding deadlines successfully;
  • Proficient with all forms of communication technology.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Senior level management experience for five or more years in western higher education;
  • International experience including Central Asia and Uzbekistan (helpful);
  • Ability to speak in Uzbek, Tajik, and/or Russian (very helpful).
