The Faculty Developer is an essential role at the University and collaborates with the Innovative Instruction Center team to advance teaching and learning efforts. The Innovative Instruction Center leads efforts on campus to promote evidence-based teaching and learning at the University though professional development opportunities for faculty, participation in teaching and learning initiatives at the institution, and research on effective teaching and learning.

The Faculty Development team supports efforts across all levels of the University to ensure that curriculum, instruction, and assessments are research-based, aligned, and supportive of all students.

Responsibilities:

  • Designs and facilitates opportunities for faculty and instructional staff to learn about evidence-based, student-centered, inclusive teaching and learning practices that promote teaching excellence and to support each other in that learning;
  • Meets with faculty and instructional staff to analyze classroom practices, assesses teaching and learning needs of courses, and shares evidence-based approaches to course design, instruction, educational technology, and Engineering Learning;
  • Provides personalized and confidential support on their teaching including consultation, classroom observations, coaching, and feedback to advance teaching practice;
  • Provides leadership and expertise on teaching and learning; contributes to campus-wide committees and conversations to advise teaching and learning initiatives on campus;
  • Designs and disseminates resources for faculty and instructional staff that connects education research and practice — creating a growing database that is readily accessible to the University community;
  • Advances a culture of equality, risk-taking, dialogue, and reflection about teaching and learning;
  • Collaborates with leadership, faculty, staff, and Innovative Instruction Center colleagues;
  • Responds to identified instructional needs of the University community and strategize to meet the needs;
  • Stays current on education research including inclusive pedagogy and high-impact teaching practices;
  • Collaborates with other units on campus to promote teaching excellence;
  • Participates in University-related work based on personal interest (e.g., grant/contract work with other University departments, educational research & scholarship of teaching and learning);
  • Work effectively in a collegial, collaborative, interdisciplinary academic environment both within the Department and across the University campus;
  • Contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community through their teaching.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related educational field (e.g., curriculum & instruction, faculty development, instructional design, etc.) or a master’s degree with three or more years of experience in a Teaching & Learning Center or in a professional development role; PhD in a closely related field such as engineering education, science education, curriculum & instruction, educational psychology, or instructional design is preferred;
  • All candidates must have demonstrable native or near-native proficiency in English;
  • Knowledge of current research, trends, and thinking in higher education teaching and learning and course mapping and evaluation;
  • Experience in designing, delivering, and evaluating professional learning opportunities; in the professional development of educators including faculty development, coaching adult learners, and assessment/documentation of the efforts;
  • Demonstrates excellence in course design, evidence-based instructional strategies, and assessment of student learning; and willingness to expand skills and respond creatively to new challenges;
  • Encompasses integrity, respect for others, and appreciation for confidentiality;
  • Communicates clearly, professionally, and effectively; and collaborates effectively;
  • Experience working in a Center for Teaching and Learning on a college campus and prior contribution to the scholarship of teaching and learning or other forms of educational research are preferred;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills;
  • Relevant subject matter expertise;
  • Enthusiasm, responsibility, and team-building skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure.
